The course will cover all topics included in the BRAHMS training guide, last
updated May 2009. The priority of training courses is to achieve participant
comprehension so that following the course, there is a high degree of
self-sufficiency. Broadly, the course will include the following:

Pre-course discussion (also by email) concerning priorities.
-
Pre-course data processing – if relevant. This can be useful if data are
available in different formats and participants want to use these data for
training purposes.
-
Introduction and ppt presentations summarizing the categories of data
managed in BRAHMS and a review of potential outputs that can be generated by
a database.
-
Step by step exercises, tasks and demonstrations following the guide
contents provided in Annex 1.
-
Course summing up and planning for next steps with data entry.
-
Post course assistance as required by email.
The trainer is Mr. Denis Filer from Oxford University (to know more about him,
see
http://dps.plants.ox.ac.uk/plants/Staff/DenisFiler.aspx).
All necessary software will be provided including map data, mapping software as
required to suit local preferences and sample databases. The trainees should
bring their own laptops (preferrably) or share using the computers available at
VNM during the course. Ideally, Google Earth is installed on participants'
computers.
The language used in the course will be English although interpretation
(English-Vietnamese) may be provided by VNM in some critical situations.
While the costs for the trainer and the trainees already selected from Cambodia
and Laos are covered by the
Sud-Expert-Plantes with
technical support from
the Institut de Reserche pour la Dévelopment (France), the Vietnamese
participants are expected to cover all the costs related to the training course
(travel, hotel, food, photocopy of training materials, ect.). The cost of the
photocopied materials will be known later as they will be made some days before
the course.

Because of the limited space in VNM, only one participant from each
Vietnamese institution is invited for this training course. The total number of
participants will be less than 30.
Participants can ask VNM for help in booking a suitable hotel in HCMC during the
course.
